- …ensures better communication with your dog;
- …is less disruptive to those around you than shouting.
Dog whistling in hunting
During the hunt, every second counts. Your dog therefore does not appreciate unclear commands. A dog whistle can transmit signals that carry further than your voice, even in strong winds or noise. Many hunters use different pitches or whistle signals to give specific commands, such as 'come back', 'go left', or 'search'.
Dog whistling in dog sports
In disciplines such as agility, flyball, or obedience, a dog whistle is useful for giving short, clear signals. Especially in situations with many distractions, a whistle helps to hold your dog's attention and convey commands quickly.
Things to keep in mind when choosing dog whistles
- Material: Plastic is lightweight and weather-resistant. Metal often produces a clearer sound. Antlers, buffalo horns, or deer horns have an authentic look.
- Pitch: Choose a whistle that sounds pleasant to you and is clearly audible to your dog. If you want to teach many commands, a whistle with a double tone is helpful.
- Adjustment: Some dog whistle are adjustable for a personal pitch.
This is how a (hunting) whistle can help with training your dog
Suppose you want to teach your dog to come back on command.
- Choose one whistle signal, for example two short tones.
- Blow the whistle, call your dog, and reward him generously with a treat or toy as soon as he reaches you.
- Repeat this several times a day, both at home and outside, until your dog automatically associates the signal with coming back.
